How to Play Catch'n'Merge — Catch Fast, Merge Calm, Evolve

Pavlo · · Guide

If you like merge games like Suika, let me tell you about Catch’n’Merge - this game will feel familiar and new at the same time. It adds a layer most merge games skip: before you get to merge anything, you have to catch it. And that changes how you think about the whole thing. It is a free merge puzzle you can play instantly in the browser, with no download.

What all of us on the team love most about Catch’n’Merge is its rhythm. The game switches between two completely different speeds: a fast, slightly tense catching phase, and a slow, relaxing merging phase. To make the separation more straightforward, we turned these stages into day and night cycles. During daytime you are darting around under pressure, at night you are calmly stacking creatures and watching them evolve. Fast, then slow. Tense, then chill. Each loop is a quick session you can finish in a few minutes. Once you feel that loop, it is hard to put down. In this guide I will walk you through both halves and the strategy that keeps you alive longer.

The two stages, and why they matter

Catch’n’Merge runs as a loop of two stages that take turns: Fall and Merge (day & night).

Fall is the busy one. Creatures, gems, and boulders drop from the sky at the top of the screen, and you slide your flask left and right to grab the good stuff and dodge the bad. It lasts about 25 seconds. The Merge stage is the calm one. Here you can aim and drop everything you caught into your merging jar at your own pace - no timer, no boulders - until you tap Next Day to start the next Fall.

The important part is that the two stages share one progression. What you catch during the day is exactly what you have to merge at night. Catch well and the Merge stage becomes a feast of merging. Catch badly and you are stuck working with scraps. So the catching phase is not just a warm-up - it decides how good your merging phase will be.

Stage one: catch & dodge

In Fall stage, move left and right by dragging with your finger or mouse (arrow keys work too). Then it is a sorting job under pressure.

Your top priority is creatures - these are your merge material, the whole reason you are here. After that, grab gems, which are your currency for Merge-stage tools. When a shield appears, take it: it wraps your flask in a protective ring and absorbs one boulder hit for free, which can save a run. And boulders are the thing to avoid - every one that connects chips away your flask’s health, and at zero health the flask shatters and the game ends.

A few strategy notes for this phase. The very first Fall of a run is a gentle one, with no boulders, so use it to fill up without fear. After that, do not get greedy: a single creature is rarely worth taking a boulder to the face for, especially when your health is low. Position early rather than lunging at the last second, and treat your shield as insurance for a catch you really want, not something to waste immediately. Also watch out for the shield timer, it will disappear after around 4 seconds even if you don’t deflect a boulder hit.

Stage two: merge and evolve

This is the most satisfying part of the game for me, especially after the intense and bountiful daytime phase. Use arrow keys, mouse or touch to drop your caught creatures into the jar one at a time, and when two of the same tier touch, they merge into the next creature up the evolution chain. Two of those make something bigger, and so on. You start with humble little creatures and work your way up. It is hard to describe how much fun I have when I get massive chain merges and rack up my score bonus, I hope you get to experience it yourself. I will also tease a secret for the patient readers who see this - there is one more hidden tier of creatures, and it’s magical!

Merge stage is a physics merge puzzle, so position matters. Creatures roll, settle, and pile up like real objects, so think about where you drop each one. Try to keep matching tiers near each other and build from the bottom up rather than scattering pieces across the jar. A tidy jar merges itself; a messy one clogs.

Overflow and your tools to avoid it

The one thing that will end your Merge phase is overflow. If you fill the jar close to the rim and it stays that way too long, you lose. So the real skill is keeping the pile under control while still climbing tiers.

You have three tools, and you get free uses for each before they start costing gems:

Shake tosses everything upward so it resettles - perfect when two creatures you want to merge are stuck apart. Remove clears out your smallest, lowest creatures when clutter is building up - to be exact, it clears all creatures of the lowest 3 tiers. Shrink shrinks one creature so it takes less space without losing its tier, which is great for relieving pressure without throwing progress away. You can even shrink the same creature multiple times.

The mistake most players make is hoarding these tools and using them only in a panic. Use them a beat early instead - a Shake to set up a merge, a Remove before the jar is already close to overflow. Acting early costs the same and saves the run.

Spend gems wisely

I’d advise planning how you use gems - you might run out at a crucial moment. Gems are persistent, so they are worth protecting, but you don’t need to hoard them - they are meant to be used. You will spend them on extra Shakes and Removes once your free uses run out, on Shrink after the first one, and on fixing your flask (buying hearts). Keep a healthy amount of gems for a tough situation and don’t forget you can always catch more in the next Fall stage.

Quick tips to climb higher

  1. Catch creatures first, gems second, and never trade health for a single pickup.
  2. Keep matching tiers together so the jar stays tidy.
  3. Use Shake and Remove a little earlier than feels necessary.
  4. Save Shrink and gems for genuine emergencies.
  5. Remember there is no finish line - Catch’n’Merge is about going as far as you can before the Fall flask shatters or the Merge jar overflows, and your best score sticks around to beat next time.

The fastest way to understand this instant-play merge puzzle is to feel the rhythm for yourself.
